Our analysis of FBI data shows that reported cases of burglary were on the decline between 2022 and 2023 while larceny and theft soared, both have been shown a decline in 2024 data. What is property crime?

The FBI categorizes property crime as including burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft. It defines these as ‘theft-type offenses’, i.e. property stolen from a victim unlawfully but without force or threat of force. The FBI categorizes robbery as a violent crime, but it’s also included in the property crime dataset we’re utilizing.

Before we get to Atlanta, what’s happening at state level?

Burglary

Burglary is the unlawful entry to someone’s property to commit a felony or theft. This generally happens in someone’s home or on business premises.

Reported cases of burglary reached an average of 1,751 incidents in Atlanta in 2023 compared with 1,762 cases in 2024. This is an increase of 10 incidents per year.

The Atlanta crime rate for burglary in 2024 was 345 per 100,000 people. This compares with 343 per 100,000 people in 2023.

Larceny

Larceny is illegally taking, moving, or carrying away someone else's property without permission. Though if being taken from someone’s home the person must have entered lawfully.

Reported cases of larceny reached 12,792 in Atlanta in 2024 compared with 12,555 in 2023. This is a year-on-year increase of 237.

Motor vehicle theft is stealing or attempting to steal a motor vehicle, such as an automobile or pickup.

Robbery is the taking of, or trying to take, something valuable from another person using force, threats, or intimidation.

The impact of being a victim in property crime

At-Promise is a long-running initiative, first launched in 2017, aimed at youths in Atlanta. Focused on crime diversion, young people are given a therapeutic assessment that results in an individualized plan for future success. These plans are focused on giving youths the education they need to thrive and live rewarding lives.


Connect Atlanta

Connect Atlanta is an Atlanta Police Foundation initiative which deploys state-of-the-art technology that uses over 20,000 public and private security cameras to monitor the city’s neighborhoods, businesses and streets. The images are fed into Atlanta Police Department’s surveillance center to provide real-time monitoring.


Mounted Patrol

Atlanta’s Mounted Patrol Unit is exactly what it says on the tin – a squadron of specially trained police officers riding on horseback to tackle crime across the city. These equine officers help with crowd control and police visibility during major events, festivals and celebrations.


Repeat Offender Initiative

The Repeat Offender Initiative strives to reduce the crime rate of repeat offenders. The Atlanta Police Foundation team does this by monitoring repeat offenders, limiting their access to firearms, and providing relevant information to appropriate bodies.
