Safest Cities in Georgia for Property Crime: Burglary, Larceny, Motor Vehicle Theft, and Robbery

Georgia is one of the US’ southeastern states – with vibrant metropolitan cities, like the capital Atlanta, and more traditionally southern cities, like Savannah. Find rich ‘Southern Charm’ everywhere, from cobbled streets and antebellum architecture to that unmistakably warm hospitality. Geographically, the Blue Ridge Mountains contrast with the sandy shores of the state’s Golden Isles. For sports and culture, golf fans flock to Augusta, to see the US Masters.

But, when it comes to those who call the state home, how is it affected by property crime? And which are the safest cities in Georgia? For people moving to the state, we’ll also explore the safest places to live in Georgia, and the Georgia crime rate.

Read on to learn how property crime is affecting cities across Georgia.

01.

Understanding property crime

To complete our analysis of property crime across Georgia we have used the most recent FBI data (2022 and 2023) on burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft – what the FBI defines as property crime and ‘theft-type offences’. These include property being taken from someone without their consent – and without the use of force. We’ve also included robbery, classed as a violent crime, in our analysis.

Crime by Year
Crime202220232024
Burglary / breaking entering22,40522,83521,920
Larceny/theft offenses132,296139,728128,298
Motor vehicle theft22,04727,02923,564

Reported cases of burglary grew by 430 between 2022 and 2023, while cases of larceny increased by 7,432. Motor vehicle theft, meanwhile, increased by 4,982 over the 12-month period. Significant increases in burglary, larceny and vehicle theft paint an overall picture of rising crime in the state.

Atlanta

The state capital of Georgia, Atlanta has a population of around 510,000 people. It’s known for blending Southern Charm with a progressive, arty vibe. Dubbed the ‘city in a forest’ due to its unique tree canopy, Atlanta’s skyline is dominated by giant trees as well as skyscrapers. But the city is best known for its role in the civil rights movement. It was the birthplace of Dr Martin Luther King, who lived and worked in Atlanta. Visitors to the city today can learn about this at the King Center.

As well as being the capital, Atlanta is the largest city in Georgia. And its property crime numbers reflect that with 1,762 burglaries in 2024 and 12,792 larcenies during the same period.

When you look at the crime rate (crimes per 100,000 people) the numbers come down considerably. There were 345 burglaries per 100,000 people, for example.

Georgia crime rate by city

The crime rate is the number of crimes per 100,000 people living in a state or city. Based on the same FBI dataset as the other data we’ve used, it’s a more nuanced way of gauging levels of crime in relation to a city’s size. The numbers below are from 2024.

The cities across Georgia vary in size, so judging which is the safest is nuanced. When reviewing the numbers of reported cases of various property crimes, consider this alongside the size of the city in question.

Crime rate data, which looks at the number of crimes per 100,000 people, perhaps offers a more accurate view of the most dangerous and safest cities in Georgia.

Disclaimer: We’ve only included data for the locations CPI Security serves. Currently this is only in the Atlanta area. More locations in Georgia will be added to this page soon. But until then it cannot be used to compare the safety of cities or to state that one city is safer than another.
